The fascinating stalls of Melton’s vegan market.

Let me start by addressing the elephant in the room. I am not vegan. I honestly don’t think I will ever be vegan. I respect vegans and will happily find a recipe in the highly unlikely case they let me loose in the kitchen unsupervised. I just happen to like K-Burgers Cheeto bites too much and will quite happily drink Vine Farm Dairy milk. With that being said, I quite happily walked away from yesterday’s Vegan market with my bank balance slightly lower than what I started with. £18 lower if I’m being precise.

I had bookmarked this event in the old “events I got to go to and take photos/video to make social media posts because they are something different” calendar and upon telling my boyfriend, there would be doughnuts got a lift in the process. This is probably a good time to inform you, if you don’t already know, about Melton’s free Sunday parking. Simply park in a council owned car park on a Sunday and you pay nothing regarding of trip length. With the 40s weekend and cheese fair taking place this month, it’s definitely worth making a note of.

Upon seeing that the doughnuts arrived slightly later then 10:30am, my semi-carnivorous boyfriend decided to head to his mother’s whilst I got social media footage. I love the boy dearly but he’s still new to the world of My Melton despite us being in a relationship for over 2 and a half years. Also I think he got slightly weirded out by the innocent Cats Protection League lady who asked if he was my carer. He’s not, but the woman saw my lanyard* and put 2 and 2 together.

This meant I was able to explore all the market at my own pace (yay) and more, importantly try beverages. Specifically Natty Root’s line of bottled goodness. £4 later and I walked off with bottle of cinnamon and ginger juice/pop which I was told could be served warm. Ironically, I had it last night fresh out the fridge. Still tasted pretty bloody good though. I just wished they had bigger bottles.

I then walked over to the vegan fish and chip van which had a very interesting menu. If someone could let me know how one has vegan cod, I would be very grateful. If only to stop my brain getting distracted every now and again by this thought. Saying that, said thought does mean I have a break from the A-U-T-I-S-M song that’s trending on Tik Tok. Before you ask, it’s rubbish and CupcakKe does a better song about autism by a country mile. Distraction aside, I personally did not buy the vegan fish and chips but was told afterwards that the van was very popular throughout the day. Clearly said van knows what they are doing.

Food and drinks aside, there were also lots of other stalls. Including beauty products, candles (they had a beautiful scented candle that I would’ve brought before my naked flame ban) and items of clothing. I did a quick video on Instagram live about the different stalls and then waited like some sort of doughnut stalker for the doughnut stalls to arrive. Look, I just happen to like doughnuts and so anywhere that does decent doughnuts gets my money.

I ended up picking up a box of 4 from Doughnutz. These cost £14 which granted, can been seen as very pricey doughnuts, but size-wise they easily can be split in two. So actually you’re paying £14 for about 8 portions for that’s just over £2 each. Doughnut economics aside, I asked their team to pick out 4 of their best. Might I say, if you have a chance to try their cinnamon bun doughnut, do it. I had half with mum earlier and it was peng.

I love events like these because they offer something different in the town. When I visited first thing in the morning, it was already fairly busy which is great for footfall purposes. It was awesome that many locals were curious about the life of veganism, even with some strong views being expressed prior to the event.

Melton BID and The Vegan Market Co. really hit this particular market out of the park. Going forward, I would love to see what businesses do to take advantage of this. One standout this time round was More Coffee that listed all their ways of accommodating vegans prior to the event. So any businesses that are unsure what to do, follow their lead. Also More Coffee are just genuinely awesome anyway so I lap up any reason to stan them further.

The next one is due to take place in November so watch this space for a specific date.

Going forward, you can expect more posts like this where I discuss different events in the borough. I am also going to draft up a few posts that discuss the awesome businesses in the area. If you like what you read, then feel free to share this blog post. Also, you can follow My Melton on your favourite social media platforms.

See you next time.

*For those of you who are curious why I have a lanyard it’s because of my current battle with my dissociative seizures, It’s basically so strangers know who to call if I have one and they don’t know what they are doing. It does work, I discovered that when I ended up having one in town last week.
